Road freight is the main risk in DSV's Schenker takeover

Can DSV do in 20 months what Maersk spread over five years?
What RBC is waiting for, seen from the floor: one customer master, one transport system and about 120 fewer terminals, all moved while the pallets keep running.
RBC has started covering DSV, the Danish forwarder that bought Schenker, at a neutral rating, and says the test is European road freight. DSV is moving road onto one system and fewer terminals within about 20 months, which has hurt productivity in Germany, France and the Netherlands. The 21 October results will show whether it is settling.
RBC Capital Markets started covering DSV on 15 October at sector perform, the bank's neutral rating. DSV is the Danish freight forwarder that bought DB Schenker from Deutsche Bahn and took it over at the end of April 2025. It says Schenker will be on DSV's own systems by the end of 2026. RBC names European road freight as the main execution risk.
That date is about 20 months after closing. I saw a slower version of this from the carrier side. Maersk closed its purchase of Hamburg Süd on 30 November 2017. It announced the retirement of the Hamburg Süd name in January 2023, a little over five years later.
That pace was deliberate. Maersk's synergies, USD 350 to 400 million a year, came mainly from the network and from procurement. Neither requires moving the customer master. Ships can change loops while every customer still books the way it always has.
DSV's DKK 9 billion a year in synergies comes largely from closing offices, terminals and applications. The saving and the switchover are the same event. In road, that means three switches at once. More than twenty transport management platforms are going into one. More than 400 groupage terminals are coming down to about 280. More than 8,000 office roles have gone.
All three land on the same consignment. The same shipper often exists in both companies, with two account numbers, two rate agreements and two credit limits. Someone decides which record survives. The shipper's EDI link and label format then have to work on day one. A liner booking can usually be corrected before the vessel cut-off. A groupage consignment that fails at booking in the evening is a pallet left on the dock the next morning. The clerk who knew which consignee wants a phone call before delivery may be one of the 8,000.
That is the drop DSV reported in July, when it said road was below expectations and called its network problems integration-related. Trade press named Germany, France and the Netherlands. It is the expected price of doing in 20 months what Maersk spread over five years. That is why RBC's neutral call looks sensible to me. The plan can work. The evidence is not in yet.
DSV reports its third quarter on 21 October. Read STAR's share of shipments. DSV's STAR system handled roughly 20% of shipments in July. For the 2026 date to hold, it has to carry most road shipments by December.
